What is it?
Genetic mutations can affect the structure or function of the retina. These mutations are usually inherited through families but may occasionally exhibit in a ‘de novo’ fashion.
Major advances in gene discovery and therapeutics have progressed the management of these conditions. The first commercially available gene therapy in medicine has been approved for the treatment of mutations affecting the RPE65 gene which plays a vital role in the visual cycle.
Symptoms
- Loss of color vision
- Loss of central vision
- Inability to see at night or in poor lighting conditions
- Restriction in field of vision
Risk Factors
- Age (usually begins at 55 years old)
- Smoking
- Light colored skin and eyes
- Diet
- Overexposure to the sun
